JUNIOR Learn-to-row

Ready to try a new sport and make new friends? In this seven-hour, four-day course, you’ll learn the basics of rowing technique, boat handling, water safety and working together as a crew, while having fun with others on Lake Ontario. By the end of the program, you will have all the skills required to advance to Hanlan’s Junior Development program.

All life jackets, safety gear and rowing equipment will be provided by Hanlan Boat Club.

COACH: This program will be coached by Head Technical Coach Horacio Tendilla (bio) and Hanlan’s assistant coaching staff.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: No rowing or swimming experience required. Non-swimmers will wear life jackets at all times. Moderate physical fitness, including the ability to lift 40 pounds, is expected, though accommodations are available.

AGE: 11-18

TIMING: Monday - Thursdays in May, 4:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. (Tuesday - Friday in the week following Victoria Day.)

2025 DATES: May 5-8; May 12-15; May 20-23; May 26-30, 2025

PRICING: $379.70 ($300 program fee + $39 HST + $40.70 Rowing Canada insurance fee)

CLASS MAKEUP POLICY: Safety is our primary concern. If weather or water conditions are unsafe and we need to cancel a session, we will schedule a make-up.

Junior Development PROGRAM

Rowers in the Junior Development program will meet three afternoons each week to improve rowing skills, increase fitness and develop on-the-water confidence. Rowers who have mastered all of the skills in the Hanlan Junior Development skills checklist and have coach approval are eligible to join the Junior Competitive program.

COACH: This program will be coached by Head Technical Coach Horacio Tendilla (bio) and Hanlan’s assistant coaching staff.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Junior Learn-to-Row program, Hanlan-YMCA Paddle and Pedal Summer Camp, or permission of Head Coach

AGE: 11-18

TIMING: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 4:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

2025 DATES: May 6 - September 26, 2025

PRICING: $1,082 ($900 fee + $117 HST + $65 Rowing Canada insurance fee)

INCLUDES: Occasional team social events and end-of-season graduation

SAFETY: Safety is our primary concern. If weather or water conditions are unsafe, practice will be conducted on land. Life jackets are mandatory for non-swimmers. Safety coach boats will accompany Junior Development rowers on the water at all times.

Junior Competitive PROGRAM (FULL SEASON)

The Junior Competitive program is for athletes, ages 12-18, who have completed a minimum of two months of the Hanlan Junior Development program and have passed a skills assessment. The focus of the program is to develop sculling and sweep rowing skills, physical fitness and racing experience. Regattas are a mandatory part of the program.

COACH: This program will be coached by Head Technical Coach Horacio Tendilla (bio) and Hanlan’s assistant coaching staff.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Hanlan’s Junior Development program (or the equivalent) and completion of a skills assessment

AGE: 11-18

TIMING: Six early morning training sessions per week (Monday-Friday: 5:30 a.m. - 7:15 a.m; Saturday: 6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.)

2025 DATES: Mid-April to October 31, 2025

PRICING: $1,590.50 ($1,350 fee + $175.50 HST + $65 Rowing Canada insurance fee). Note: Regatta fees are extra.

INCLUDES: Includes free, bi-monthly Hanlan barbecues on Thursday nights and occasional team social events.

SAFETY: Safety is our primary concern. If weather or water conditions are unsafe, practice will be conducted on land. Safety coach boats will accompany Junior Competitive rowers on the water at all times.

OTHER: Athletes must commit to racing at regattas and should plan to attend most or all practices.

JUNIOR COMPETITIVE PROGRAM (SuMMER ONLY)

If you currently row in high school and want to continue your training over the summer, you can join Hanlan’s junior competitive program for a pro-rated fee from mid-June to late August. You’ll improve your technique in both sweep rowing and sculling while competing in races across southeastern Ontario, including the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta. Nothing is better than summer rowing!

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Hanlan’s Junior Development program (or the equivalent) and completion of a skills assessment

AGE: 11-18

PRICING: $791 ($700 fee + $91 HST). (Note: This fee assumes the athlete is already registered with Rowing Canada through a high school team. All regatta fees are extra.)
