ADULT ROWING: AGES 19-90+

At Hanlan, our mission is to inspire and support everyone on their rowing journey. To do this, we offer a variety of programs for rowers of all levels of experience. Whether you’re a newbie rower who wants to commune with nature or an elite-level athlete who seeks to race competitively across North America, we have a program for you.

PROGRAMS

U23/Senior competitive PROGRAM

The Senior/U23 Competitive program is for university rowers, recent graduates and highly competitive adults, ages 19+. In this program, you will train hard to compete in 2,000 m regattas in the summer and five km regattas in the fall. Athletes must commit to attending up to six practices per week and improving performance in every aspect of the sport.

LEARN-TO-ROW PROGRAM

Begin your rowing journey with Hanlan’s Learn-to-Row 101 program, where you’ll learn how to row with one oar and how to work together as a crew. Continue exploring the sport with Learn-to-Row 201 where you’ll row with two oars and develop even more confidence on the water. Finally, in Learn-to-Row 301, you’ll refine your skills and become a truly independent rower!

MASTERS RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

The Masters Recreational program is for adults interested in building fitness and improving rowing skills while having a fun time with fellow rowers, ages 18-80+. You will have the option to row in crews and be guided by a coach, or row independently, exploring Lake Ontario’s Outer Harbour to your heart’s content. Once you’ve returned to shore, you can attend free barbecues and other social events with your crewmates.

MASTERS COMPETITIVE PROGRAM

The Masters Competitive program is designed for experienced adult rowers, ages 21-80+, who want to train seriously with other like-minded athletes and receive expert coaching. You will practice up to six mornings per week in preparation for summer sprint racing, fall head races, and winter indoor ergometer competitions, pushing yourself to achieve your personal performance goals.

FAQs

ADULTS, SENIORS, MASTERS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Masters are adult rowers who are 18+.  Some masters rowers compete at masters regattas; others don’t compete at all.  We use the terms “adult” and “masters” interchangeably.

Seniors are generally undergraduate or graduate students, ages 18+, with some competitive experience. At Hanlan, we refer to these rowers as “U23/Seniors.”

SCULLING OR SWEEP ROWING?

Sculling: Two oars per rower, rowing in a one-, two-or four-person boat (aka “shell”).  Delivers an immediate feeling of connectivity to the water, the boat, and your own body’s movements.

Sweep Rowing: One oar per rower, rowing in a two-, four- or eight-person shell. Teamwork, camaraderie, and moving in sync with fellow rowers is the name of the game.
