ADULT LEARN-TO-ROW PROGRAMS


LEARN-TO-ROW 101

New to rowing? Hanlan’s Learn-to-Row program is for you. In this six-hour, two-day Learn-to-Row 101 course, you’ll learn the basics of rowing technique, boat handling, water safety, and working together as a crew. The program focuses on sweep rowing, in which rowers hold a single oar and move in unison to move the boat forward.

All life jackets, safety gear, and rowing equipment will be provided by Hanlan Boat Club.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: No rowing or swimming experience required. Non-swimmers will wear life jackets at all times. Moderate physical fitness, including the ability to lift 40 pounds, is expected, though accommodations are available.

AGE: 18+

TIMING: Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

2025 DATES: May 3/4, May 17/18, May 19/21, May 31/June 1, June 2/4, June 14/15, June 16/18, June 28/29, June 30/July 2, July 12/13, July 14/16, July 26/27

PRICING:  $351.45 ($275 fee + $35.75 HST + $40.70 Rowing Canada insurance fee)

CLASS MAKEUP POLICY:  Safety is our primary concern. If weather or water conditions are unsafe and we need to cancel a session, we will schedule a make-up.


LEARN-TO-ROW 201

Grow your base of rowing skills in the second step of Hanlan’s Learn-to-Row program. This six-hour, two-day course focuses on sculling, in which rowers hold an oar in each hand to propel the boat forward. As rowers gain confidence, crews venture further into the Outer Harbour, exploring Toronto’s waterways as they become more adept rowers.

All life jackets, safety gear, and rowing equipment will be provided by Hanlan Boat Club.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Must have completed Learn-to-Row 101 or have prior rowing experience. Non-swimmers will wear life jackets at all times. Moderate physical fitness, including the ability to lift 40 pounds, is expected, though some accommodations are available.

AGE: 18+

TIMING: Weekend sessions run on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Weekday sessions run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

2025 DATES: May 10/11, May 24/25, May 26/28, June 7/8, June 9/11, June 21/22, June 23/25, July 5/6, July 7/9, July 19/20, July 21/23, July 28/30

PRICING:  $310.75 ($275 fee + $35.75 HST); plus $40.70 Rowing Canada insurance fee if not paid previously in Learn-to-Row 101

LEARN-TO-ROW 301

Take the next step in your rowing journey with Hanlan’s four-month-long, Learn-to-Row 301 program. Coaches will help you to refine your rowing technique, as well as master specific boating skills, such as docking, bowing, and turning. Rowers who complete the program will have the confidence to scull and sweep in boats of any size at the Club, as well as to row independently on Lake Ontario for the rest of the season as a member of the Club. Get ready to explore the sport in more depth than ever before!

All life jackets, safety gear, and rowing equipment will be provided by Hanlan Boat Club.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Must have successfully completed Learn-to-Row 201 or have prior approval of a Hanlan coach. Moderate physical fitness, including the ability to lift 40 pounds, is expected, though some accommodations are available.

AGE: 18+

TIMING: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., May - August, 2025

2025 DATES: Tuesday, May 13, 2025 - Thursday, August 14, 2025

PRICING:  $678 ($600 fee + $78 HST)
